a family of love

There’s something special about photographing a family and Keith’s family was no exception. As I held my eye to the viewfinder of my camera, I watched as this family gently and lovingly interacted with one another. I could see the love that Keith has for his children. I could see the love that these two sweet boys have for their little sister. I could see the love that this beautiful little girl has for the three boys in her life. This family is truly blessed and I felt blessed walking away from this session. Thank you Keith for allowing me to photograph your beautiful family.

Generally it’s only when she’s sick that she falls asleep anywhere but her bed. Thankfully on this day she was perfectly healthy and just so happened to take a snooze precisely where the window light was falling. I couldn’t pass up my chance.

It makes my heart happy to see my children helping each other out. Although Finn doesn’t know how to read yet, he was more than happy to show Zoey what the book said.

quiet time

The kids have enjoyed their quiet time with daddy now that he’s back on the day shift. When he works the night shift, they only get to see him for an hour here or there but they love being able to spend the day with him whether they’re playing games, building tents or curled up in bed with a book.

Layla, my firstborn, turned 5 earlier this month. As much as I miss her being a baby, the girl she is growing to be makes this mommy so incredibly happy. She’s generous, kind and compassionate (she’s not without her naughty moments though). Beautiful and loves all things girly and princessy. She loves to learn and can’t wait for kindergarten. Coloring is one of her favorite activities but her knew love is photography via her ipod. I love, love, love my sweet little princess!

And what little girl doesn’t love to twirl a little?

I didn’t grow up with boys. I only had one boy cousin and he is much younger than I am. When I married into a family with 6 brother, I saw a world that I never knew existed. A world of rough housing, wrestling matches, sports galore and food. Man do boys eat a lot of food! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine myself raising a boy. It’s a fun yet exhausting job. I love this ornery little thing with every ounce of me.

Miss Olivia here is my niece and I got the privilege of taking her 9 month pictures. On top of being absolutely adorable, she is incredibly sweet and happy. Seriously though, what’s not to be happy about at this age? She’s just recently learned to crawl, she gets to try new and yummy food all the time, she has a big brother who loves her and two incredible parents. Sounds like a good gig to me.

Last week I nursed Zoey for the last time. She’s 16 months old. Zoey was my first child that I successfully breastfed and it was important to me to document that with a picture. I have nothing against formula feeding but I really wanted to breastfeed. I had a very painful nursing experience with Layla and didn’t make it past 3 weeks. With Finley, he took too long to nurse and wouldn’t get full so I had to resort to pumping and bottle feeding. I only made it 5 months with him. But with Zoey, she loved nursing and I loved nursing her. That doesn’t mean I didn’t have my moments that I wanted to throw in the towel but the risk of her getting food allergies like Finley drove me to continue (she doesn’t have them by the way). I am so thankful we made it this far and I’m thankful that my husband so graciously photographed it for me.

These moments don’t last forever and I’m blessed to have this visual reminder to bring me back to this moment.

Everything about a child changes so quickly. From their size (look at a newborn compared to a 4 week old), their personality (I love the 3-6 month age when their personality really starts to bloom) and their abilities (one year olds are crazy busy with all the new things they’ve learned to do). Then there’s this; the faces. Even as a newborn, every child has their own unique expressions. Unfortunately, they don’t last long. They constantly change and you usually don’t see the same one over a long period of time. That’s one of my favorite things about photography. I can freeze that expression forever. Zoey isn’t going to make this face when she’s 20 and mimicking the sound of a firetruck. But, when she’s 20, I can look back at this photograph and remember how she looked. I can remember her tiny little body wiggle and jump in excitement just at the word “firetruck” (for those of you who don’t know, her daddy is a firefighter). I’ll remember her joy as she sees one passing by. I’ll forever remember.
